Day 01— From Sea to Rif
From Tangier to the Blue Pearl of Chefchaouen

The journey begins where the Mediterranean and the Atlantic touch and, across a few miles of water, Europe faces Africa. You leave Tangier, a free port and a refuge for writers in the 1950s, and climb among the green hills of the Rif to Chefchaouen, the 'Blue Pearl': a fortified quarter of lanes washed in every shade of blue, founded in 1471 as a stronghold against the Portuguese and later a refuge for Jews and Muslims fleeing Spain. You lose yourself among the indigo stairways, the terracotta pots, the cats in the sun and the painted doors, while local women pass in their pom-pom straw hats. At sunset you climb to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint: the whole blue town glows gold against the Rif peaks.

Day 02— Ruins and Empires
Roman Volubilis and Meknes on to Fes
Chefchaouen → FesDrive — approx. 125 mi / ~4h
You leave the blue of the Rif and drop toward the plain, stopping at Volubilis, the southernmost Roman city of North Africa: here, between the 1st and 3rd centuries, an olive-oil town flourished, and today the Arch of Caracalla, the forum and above all the mosaics still lie open to the sky, vivid after eighteen centuries — Orpheus, the labours of Hercules, a chariot drawn by peacocks. A few miles on stands Moulay Idriss, a holy town perched on two hills around the tomb of the founder of the first Moroccan state. You pass Meknes and its Bab Mansour before making for Fes. You arrive as the sun sets over the nine thousand lanes of the medina, already catching the smell of cedar and of bread baked in the neighbourhood ovens.

Day 03— From Snow to Sand
Cedars, Monkeys and the Ziz Valley to the Dunes

In a single day you cross three Moroccos. First Ifrane, a town of steep roofs and flower beds built by the French in the 1930s, so tidy it earned the nickname 'Moroccan Switzerland'; a little beyond, the cedar forest of Azrou, where Barbary macaques — the only wild primates north of the Sahara — come down to study you among thousand-year-old trees. Then the long descent along the Ziz Valley, a canyon where the river draws a green snake of palms at the foot of bare rock. The light changes, the air warms, and suddenly the road opens onto the desert. You reach Merzouga, mount a dromedary, and the caravan carries you to camp as the sun touches the crests of the erg.

Day 04— The Road of Kasbahs
From the Dunes to the Dades by the Road of Kasbahs
Merzouga → DadesDrive — approx. 185 mi / ~5h
After sunrise and breakfast you leave the erg and head west along the legendary 'road of a thousand kasbahs', which follows the old caravan tracks from court to court. You stop at Rissani for the souk, then the land turns lunar between Alnif and Tinghir until the palm groves return. You climb the Todra Gorge, where the red walls press in on the river, and go on toward the Dades Valley among mud fortresses that once controlled the passage of goods — dates, salt, gold — to the north. Every kasbah is a family, a story of crenellated towers and hidden courtyards. When you reach Boumalne Dades, the low sun turns the packed earth to red gold.

Day 05— The Last Pass
From the Dades to Marrakech through Roses and Kasbahs

The last great day of driving climbs back through the Valley of Roses and passes Skoura, the oasis of a thousand palms where the Amridil kasbah — the one printed on the fifty-dirham note — mirrors itself in the water. You reach Ait Ben Haddou unhurried, with time to climb to the granary at the top of the ksar and grasp why filmmakers from around the world have returned here for sixty years: the light on raw earth has no equal. Then the car turns toward the High Atlas and takes on the Tizi n'Tichka, the hairpins, the sellers of amethyst and fossils at the switchbacks, the views opening at every bend. You descend to the Marrakech plain as the sun sets; the Red City waits with its lanterns.
