6-Day Tour from Agadir to Merzouga

Day 01— Toward the Interior

From the Coast to Ouarzazate by the Saffron Road

You leave the ocean at Agadir and head inland along a little-travelled road full of surprises. The first is Taroudant, the 'little Marrakech': a town enclosed by three miles of ochre earthen walls, with Berber souks less touristy and more authentic than those of the north. Then you climb to Taliouine, Morocco's saffron capital, where every autumn the stigmas of the world's most precious spice are picked by hand, flower by flower at dawn. The landscape turns mountainous across the Anti-Atlas, among argan villages and bare plateaus, to Ouarzazate, the 'gate of the desert', dominated by the Kasbah Taourirt of the Glaoui pasha. In the evening the dry southern air already announces the Sahara.

Day 02— Red Earth

Ait Ben Haddou, the Valley of Roses and the Dades

In the morning you reach Ait Ben Haddou, the ksar of mud and straw rising in tiers toward a hilltop: a UNESCO site since 1987 and a set for Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones, but above all an old caravan fortress on the road of gold and salt. You climb to the granary at the top for the view over the valley, then head back east. The road enters the Valley of Roses around Kelaat M'Gouna, where the Damask rose — carried, by legend, by pilgrims from Mecca — colours the fields and scents the air. You follow the Dades Valley among crumbling kasbahs and palm groves, while the 'monkey finger' rock formations curl along the flanks. At sunset the stone glows like embers.

Day 03— Toward the Great Erg

The Todra Gorge and the Dunes of Merzouga

In the morning you climb back up to the Todra Gorge, where the river has cut a cleft between walls nearly a thousand feet high, so close that at noon they let through only a blade of light; climbers trace routes here from all over Europe. Then the land opens out, the palm groves thin, and the stony hammada gives way to something older: on the horizon rise the first crests of Erg Chebbi, mountains of orange sand over five hundred feet tall. You leave the car at the foot of the dunes and mount a dromedary for the last stretch, the caravan climbing in silence toward the tented camp. On the dune's crest you wait for sunset: the sand shifts from gold to copper to violet, and a silence falls that you can feel in your ears.

Day 04— The Great Erg

The Heart of Erg Chebbi: Nomads and Gnawa

A whole day inside the great sea of sand, aboard a 4×4 that slides between the dunes. You visit Khamlia, a village of Malian descendants where the Gnawa brotherhood plays its dark rhythms as both exorcism and celebration; you stop with a nomad family still living off goats and camels under wool tents, and share a tea that is a ceremony in itself. You pass the abandoned Mifiss mines and hunt for fossils three hundred million years old, from when this was seabed. The 'Berber pizza' — madfouna baked under the sand — is lunch. At sunset you climb the highest crests with a sandboard or simply on bare feet, while the shadows of the dunes stretch out to infinity.

Day 05— The Way Back

From the Dunes to Ouarzazate by the Draa

After dawn on the crests and breakfast at camp, you leave the erg and head west along one of the finest roads in the south. You stop at Rissani for the souk, then the land turns lunar between Alnif and Tazarine, below the Jebel Saghro. You enter the Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river: a snake of a hundred thousand palms at the foot of bare rock, with old mud kasbahs that follow the water from oasis to oasis. You cross Agdz below Jebel Kissane and reach Ouarzazate in the afternoon. It is a day of landscapes sliding past the window: tomorrow you return to the ocean, but tonight the silence of the south is enough.

Day 06— Toward the Ocean

Back to Agadir by the Saffron Road

The last day retraces the saffron road, closing the loop from coast to desert and back. You cross the Anti-Atlas again, among argan plateaus where goats climb the trees and earthen villages cling to the rock. You stop at Taliouine, the saffron capital, perhaps to buy a few grams of the world's most precious spice straight from the growers, and at Taroudant, the 'little Marrakech' enclosed by its ochre walls, for a last turn through the Berber souks. Then the road drops back toward the plain and the air turns damp with ocean: Agadir takes you in again with its long golden beach. You have been away six days and touched the great erg; the sea, now, feels like another planet.
