Day 01— The Beginning

The honeymoon begins behind a cedar door: the riad that welcomes you is a house with a hushed courtyard, rose petals on the fountain water and mint tea poured from a foot above the glass. Marrakech, founded around 1070, is made for those who arrive as a pair — noisy and intimate at once, able to hide corners of calm behind the roar of the souks. In the evening you drift down to Jemaa el-Fna, the square that lights up at sunset with lanterns, the smoke of the grills and storytellers: a theatre centuries old. There is nothing to decode, only to walk through hand in hand; and when the square turns to gold, the journey has already begun well.

Day 02— The Red City

Marrakech among Palaces, Gardens and a Hammam

Drive — on foot within the medina

With a guide you cross the Marrakech the walls keep hidden: the Koutoubia, whose 12th-century minaret inspired Seville's Giralda; the Bahia Palace, eighty rooms willed by a grand vizier so no two would match; the Saadian Tombs, sealed for centuries and rediscovered only in 1917. You lose yourselves among the copper and spice souks, then the cobalt green of the Majorelle Garden cools the eyes. But the day's true gift is the hammam: steam, black olive soap, the kessa glove and an argan-oil massage that melts away the journey. In the evening, a candlelit dinner on a terrace: below you the red sea of rooftops, on the horizon the snow-topped Atlas.

Day 03— Red Earth

Ait Ben Haddou, the Valley of Roses and the Dades

You cross the Tizi n'Tichka again and drop to Ait Ben Haddou, the earthen ksar UNESCO has protected since 1987, before passing Ouarzazate and its film studios, the 'Hollywood of the desert'. Then the road enters the Valley of Roses, around Kelaat M'Gouna: here, every May, a festival honours the Damask rose said to have been carried back by pilgrims from Mecca, and from a thousand hedges comes the rosewater that scents the whole region. You follow the Dades Valley among crumbling kasbahs and palm groves, while the rock formations called 'monkey fingers' curl above you. When the gorge closes in, the last light sets the walls glowing like embers.

Day 04— Toward the Great Erg

The Todra Gorge and a Sunset by Dromedary

In the morning you climb back up to the Todra Gorge, where the river has cut a cleft between walls nearly a thousand feet high, so close that at noon they let through only a blade of light; climbers trace routes here from all over Europe. Then the land opens out, the palm groves thin, and the stony hammada gives way to something older: on the horizon rise the first crests of Erg Chebbi, mountains of orange sand over five hundred feet tall. You leave the car at the foot of the dunes and mount a dromedary for the last stretch, the caravan climbing in silence toward the tented camp. On the dune's crest you wait for sunset: the sand shifts from gold to copper to violet, and a silence falls that you can feel in your ears.

Day 05— The Great Erg

The Great Erg and a Second Night at Camp

A whole day inside the great sea of sand, aboard a 4×4 that slides between the dunes. You visit Khamlia, a village of Malian descendants where the Gnawa brotherhood plays its dark rhythms as both exorcism and celebration; you stop with a nomad family still living off goats and camels under wool tents, and share a tea that is a ceremony in itself. You pass the abandoned Mifiss mines and hunt for fossils three hundred million years old, from when this was seabed. The 'Berber pizza' — madfouna baked under the sand — is lunch. At sunset you climb the highest crests with a sandboard or simply on bare feet, while the shadows of the dunes stretch out to infinity.

Day 06— Toward the Ocean

From the Dunes to Ouarzazate by the Draa

One last breakfast at camp, then the road climbs the Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river: a snake of a hundred thousand palms at the foot of the rock, with mud kasbahs that follow the water from oasis to oasis. You stop at Rissani, cradle of the dynasty that still reigns today, and at Agdz below Jebel Kissane, as the desert turns to stone and then to green. The Anti-Atlas keeps you company to Ouarzazate, the 'gate of the desert', dominated by the Kasbah Taourirt of the Glaoui pasha. It is a gentle day of transition, of landscapes sliding past the window: tomorrow the sand will give way to the ocean, but tonight the silence of a kasbah turned hotel is enough.

Day 07— Salt and Ocean

On to Essaouira, City of the Wind

You cross the heart of the country, from the buttresses of the Atlas to the argan plateaus where goats climb the trees, until the air changes: it turns damp, tastes of salt, and Essaouira appears. Portuguese ramparts hammered by the wind, a harbour full of blue boats and gulls, the Skala bastions where Orson Welles shot his Othello and where later the hippie generation sought refuge. The white-and-blue medina, a UNESCO site, is an airy maze of thuya-wood workshops and cafés over the water. For a couple, Essaouira is the perfect counterpoint to the desert: here you slow down, stroll the ramparts at sunset, dine on fish while the Atlantic throws itself at the rocks.

Day 08— The Sweet Farewell

The morning is yours: a barefoot walk along the long windswept beach, a turn among the fragrant wood workshops where craftsmen inlay thuya as they have for generations, a last grilled fish on the harbour. In the early afternoon you head back inland, with a possible stop at an argan cooperative where women still crack the nuts by hand. Marrakech takes you in for a final night, and the Red City, seen through the eyes of those who have crossed desert and ocean, feels more intense still: the lanterns, the scent of spices, the pulsing square. A special dinner closes the circle of a honeymoon that has touched every possible Morocco.

Day 09— The Return

Farewell to the Newlyweds

The last morning drifts by slowly, as happy farewells should. There is time for a coffee in the courtyard, for a final turn among the workshops in search of the right souvenir, to let nine days settle — days that joined the square of Marrakech, the silence of the dunes and the wind of the ocean. Then we take you to the airport. A honeymoon in Morocco is not a postcard but a pact: to have watched together the sun rise over Erg Chebbi and set over the Atlantic is something that stays. Morocco, they say here, is never visited only once; and as the red plain falls away, you already know that one day you will return, perhaps no longer just as two.
